CANDYS STORY

**For New Members**

Seven years ago, before Candy’s Hound Rescue was officially founded, I used to rescue a few dogs from China under my UK charity, Greyhound Protection UK. One day, I was asked to take in a little Whippet-Lurcher mix named Candy. She had been rescued from the Dog Meat Trade but was sent to a terrible shelter in China (now shut down) that housed thousands of dogs in awful conditions.

Candy’s condition was heartbreaking—she had three broken legs and distemper. Her chances of survival were slim, but thanks to the incredible efforts of vets and DoeDoe in China, she made an astonishing recovery. After nine months of care, she was healthy and thriving.

I was overjoyed and eagerly preparing to travel to Paris to bring Candy home, along with four other dogs. But just before the trip, I received devastating news. DoeDoe called to tell me that Candy had been killed in the boarding kennels. She had been attacked by another dog and died instantly.

We were heartbroken, and through tears, DoeDoe and I made a promise—to Candy and to each other—that we would save as many Greyhounds and Sighthounds as we could. That promise gave birth to Candy Cane Rescue, now known as Candy’s Hound Rescue.

Candy’s story is the foundation of everything we do. She was a precious soul, and her legacy lives on in the many dogs we’ve rescued and continue to save in her honor.
