2nd Annual Candle Lighting for Meat Trade Victims & Rescuers

21st June 2020 @ 8:00 am - 31st July 2020 @ 5:00 pm

June 21 marks Summer Solstice. It also marks the beginning of the 2020 Lychee and Dog Meat Festival. It ends on June 30. (“Lychee” is a name of the a tree that bears a fruit by the same name.)

While the festival accounts for “just” 0.01% of dogs slaughtered for meat each year in China, it receives much attention in the media. The more reliable sources calculate that 1,000 dogs are killed during the festival; other sources put it at much more. Regardless, it is an abomination being fought against by many Chinese and other folks from around the world.

While the number of dogs tortured and killed at the festival is a small fraction of the overall number of dogs who are slaughtered for meat in China, it is the most notorious event. Therefore, it is an opportune time to show our support for the animal welfare advocates in China and abroad and the canine victims of the dog (and cat) meat trade.

Please light a candle, physical or virtual, each day or night, June 21 through June 30 in solidarity.

Will Lighting a Candle Save the World?
Of course not. But this is a peaceful protest that sends a message to the perpetrators and rescuers in China and other nations. It says, “We’re here. We know. And we support the end of this however each of us is able.”

If you’d like to light a virtual candle, this is an excellent, free website where you an do so:

Please share this event with others so we may light as many candles as possible.

To follow is an excellent, well researched and written article from AnimalAsia on the festival and the dog and cat meat trade in China. I am not familiar enough with this organization to endorse it or to recommend donating to them. However, the information shared is credible.

Trigger warning: Photos and content of this article are disturbing and may be too horrific for some viewers. Please review at your own discretion.
